Taking care of your mouth is about more than just cleaning it–you need to fuel it well, too! Here are some tasty foods to include in a tooth-healthy diet this season.
Apples: Crisp fruits, such as apples and pears, act as “nature’s toothbrushes,” scraping away food and plaque from the surfaces of your teeth. They are also a great way to get sweetness into your diet without reaching for refined sugars.
Dark Leafy Greens: Dark leafy greens, such as kale and spinach, are rich in calcium and vitamins. That makes them an excellent choice for mouth health.
Beans: Beans are nutritious, and also full of calcium. Some varieties offer half the daily recommended requirement of calcium in only 1 cup! A particularly good choice if you need to limit your dairy intake.
Dairy: Dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese, are full of calcium and protein for a healthy mouth. Choose low-sugar varieties, such as plain milk and yogurt. This will help prevent rapid bacterial growth in the mouth.
Calcium-Fortified Orange Juice: This is an excellent source of calcium, with the full day’s requirement in just one serving! However, be careful with how you drink it, as prolonged contact with the acidic juice can be damaging to your teeth. Drink it with a large meal to help neutralize the acids, then accompany it with a large glass of water. Chew sugar-free gum after eating and drinking to help clean the mouth and prevent damage to teeth.
