Your child’s early oral development is very important. You can start brushing and flossing your child’s teeth as they develop and emerge from the gums. It’s also a good idea to bring your child in for their first dental checkup at some point in their first year and every six months thereafter.

Each of these appointments with Dr. Philip Copenhaver or Dr. Catherine T. Bordlemay will monitor your child’s oral development as well as clean their teeth.

If there are any concerns about the strength of your child’s tooth enamel, they might recommend a simple fluoride treatment. This is more common with older children who can comfortably hold the fluoride trays in their mouth without distress.

It is a preventative measure that only takes a few minutes and can easily be added to the end of their dental checkup. The concentrated fluoride will bolster the mineral strength of their teeth to help prevent cavities.

Small children who are likely to struggle with a fluoride treatment might benefit from prescription fluoride supplements. This can often come in the form of a simple ingestible liquid that they take each day.

If our dentist notices any other oral health or development issues in your child’s mouth they will help you understand your treatment options.
